Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Only two more days until the movie! Or really, closer to 24 hours if you’re seeing it at midnight like you should. (Side note: I wonder how much Starbucks sales skyrocket the day after Harry Potter releases …) Anyway, if you need help getting excited, here’s a well-made (although not really well-sung) music video, starring a really huge snake and also a chihuahua as Dobby. Seriously.

For the fourth post in the six-day series, we’re going to explore a couple of completely awesome mythical Harry Potter creatures. Or at least their real-life counterparts.

Some people, of course, really do believe that creatures such as dragons are not mythical, so I should probably start out by making it clear that we don’t have any evidence that says these guys existed. Sorry. Some of the legends might have arisen after ancient people found fossils and bones of animals that they did not recognize. These animals were probably dinosaurs. (Bonus! This link contains additional Harry references – a dinosaur named Dracorex, named after Malfoy himself.) Strangely enough, even modern people can get tricked into thinking along these lines – not too long ago, it was discovered that Chinese villagers were eating and treating injuries with dinosaur bones that were thought to be dragon bones. More mythical creatures here!!
